Across East Africa, the future of girls and young women is being redefined through bold partnerships, community-driven solutions and sustained commitment to ending harmful practices. One such collaboration is between Tunaweza Empowerment Organization and Amref Health Africa under the Future4Binti (F4B) programme.
The programme marks a new five-year chapter (2026–2030), funded by the Government of the Netherlands, focused on protecting, empowering and uplifting girls and young women, with emphasis on eliminating Female Genital Mutilation/Cut (FGM/C) and Child Marriage. It also addresses the social norms, inequalities and systemic barriers that sustain these practices.
Localized Action in Kuria, Migori County, Kenya
The partnership focuses on community led action in Kuria and surrounding areas, where cross-border FGM/C between Kenya and Tanzania remains a challenge. Tunaweza brings strong community presence and experience working with adolescents and young people, particularly AGYW, implementing grassroots interventions on coordination, prevention and response.
A Holistic, Community-Centered Approach
The programme drives:
-Community Dialogues & Norm Transformation
-Youth-Led Advocacy & Safe Spaces
-Media Engagement & Digital Advocacy
-Cross-Border Collaboration
-Safeguarding and Protection Systems
Shifting Power, Changing Narratives
This partnership centers communities, especially girls, as leaders, advocates and changemakers. Young women are speaking out, negotiating for their rights and influencing others, while young men are engaged as allies in ending FGM/C.
Looking Ahead: A Future Without Harm
Over the next five years, the partnership aims to ensure:
-Girls are free from harmful practices
-Young women can pursue education and opportunities
-Communities uphold the rights, dignity and wellbeing of every girl
This is more than a programme, it is a movement toward equity, justice and empowerment.
